ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK) BY DR. ALAN SERURE IN MIAMI, FLORIDA
Loose abdominal skin and excess fat is removed during an Abdominoplasty. Following significant weight loss or pregnancy, the skin may lose elasticity and fatty tissue accumulates in the abdomen. Whatever the cause, an Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) will remove excess fat and skin. The excess fat is removed and the loose stomach muscles are tightened, creating a smoother, firmer, and thinner appearance. The incision involves a scar at the bikini line of the lower abdomen, which is permanent but can fade with time. There is also a small scar around the umbilicus (belly button).
An Abdominoplasty is commonly performed in conjunction with Liposuction to contour the waist, hips, back, and thighs. Patients will usually have a drain placed, which is removed in seven to fourteen days.
A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. The results are permanent, but weight gain can alter the outcome. A tummy tuck may remove some of the stretch marks located between the umbilicus (belly button) and the pubic area, as well as excess fatty tissue and loose skin.
The Abdominoplasty procedure is done either as an outpatient procedure with an overnight private duty nurse assisting you in the privacy of your own home or hotel room, or in the hospital, with an overnight stay. In most cases, an epidural anesthetic with sedation is the preferred choice by Dr. Alan Serure, giving the patients a speedier and smoother recovery. You may discuss the anesthetic choices with our anesthetic team prior to surgery.
As in all procedures, patients must be in optimal physical condition. It is advised that out of town patients stay in Miami for at least two weeks following surgery so they can be observed and appropriate post operative care can be given.
Abdominoplasty will be performed only in patients with stable weight and without a history of blood clotting disorders. Smokers are not candidates for Abdominoplasty and the patient must be nicotine free prior to embarking on surgery. Patients must discontinue oral contraceptives and Estrogen Hormone Replacement Therapy prior to surgery.
