OTOPLASTY (PROTRUBERANT EARS) BY DR. ALAN SERURE IN MIAMI, FLORIDA
Otoplasty is employed in patients who have protruberant ears. The incisions are hidden behind the ear and the ear cartilage is sculpted. Sutures are usually absorbable, but if any sutures are placed, they are usually removed within a week. A dressing is placed to protect the ears for the first two or three days. Patients are then advised to wear a headband to protect their ears for the next two or three weeks while they sleep.
Otoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. Anesthesia can be done with “twilight” sedation or general anesthesia, with the patient not experiencing any discomfort during surgery.
Otoplasty can be performed in children as young as five or six years of age, when they become self conscious of the appearance of their ears. If not corrected in childhood, otoplasty is performed on adults.
As in all procedures, patients must be in optimal physical condition. It is advised that out of town patients stay in Miami for one week so they can be observed and appropriate post operative care can be given.
